What an unforgettable experience I had. Ghanaians are very welcoming. Anyone you meet on the street is friendly and ready to help you. I am definitely coming back to this wonderful country.
Thank you very much everyone at RVO. I appreciate your help so much. I will never forget you all especially Mr. Richmond who I hanged out with at the bar most weeks. One Love

My volunteer experience was absolutely amazing. I started having a good feeling about my stay from day 1 of my arrival at the airport when the pickup staff was there on time and transferred me to hotel, I felt so safe and during the early day’s orientations about the project, people and the language and cultural program. etc.
Bernard was responsible for my field activities. The first week, Bernard brought me everywhere and answered to all my needs and questions. The language and culture programmeis very helpful, especially if you’re staying for more than a month. Ghanaians are very happy when you can say a few words in Twi.
Ghanaians are amazing people. They welcome you with open arms and make you feel at ease. The school kids are hilarious and yell “Obruni” (white) every time they see you. The teachers were very helpful and supportive, kind and tolerant, I almost felt like home after a couple of weeks. Everything is chaotic in Ghana but simply accept it and open your mind and you will have no problems fitting in. Ghana is safer to walk around done my home country.
The accommodation on the ground is rather basic but compared to everyone else in Ghana it’s almost luxurious. Sure, there was running water at my hostfamily almost everyday which made me had a good shower. Aunty Millie, the cook, prepares very good meals. Ask her for Fufu with red stew: it was delicious. The pancakes, red-red (plaintain and beans), egg sandwiches and spring rolls are excellent as well.
I recommend RVO to everyone. I really had a life-changing experience and met wonderful people. The first few days are hard, but as long as you open your mind and don’t give up, you’ll be just fine.

What do you think should be done to improve our program : I think you don’t have to change anything but it would be okay if you can add more weekends to the guided tours

Hello
I am Maria and I am writing on behalf of my boyfriend and I ,. We just return home from a wonderful 3 weeks trip which includes 2 weeks of community orphanage and teaching work ,sports and other activities we took part in. The kids at the orphanage and school were amazing . we miss them already. The hotel accommodation and bus during the tour was great.
I must say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in the organization of the program. they did a great job bringing us all the eleven participants from different countries together . We have made new friends now . We really enjoyed the tour part of the program. This program was safer and successful so I recommend to everyone.
Thank you all.

I was well taken care of by the RVO staff who gave me good info prior to my preparations and departure to Ghana. They picked me up at the airport and went above and beyond to make sure I experienced the Ghanaian lifestyle. Richmond and Bernard are both very responsive, helpful and caring. The experience at the orphanage was amazing. There are many children and only few staff members and there were few volunteers when I was there, so any extra attention and love the children get makes a big difference. I mainly played with the children and took care of the infants which was exactly what I wanted to do.. The children are loving and beautiful and I loved the experience of playing with them. They need love and attention and it was amazing. Other things that volunteers were doing were painting a map mural, working in the nursery, creating a hand-washing before meals program, cleaning dishes in the kitchen.. I brought tons of children’s clothes, toys, soccer balls, infant formula, children’s vitamins, first aid kits and they were all useful and needed. The toys were stored in the office and not given directly to the kids as the staff was afraid the kids would spoil them but whenever I wanted to share the toys with the kids, I would just go into the office and get them and play games, soccer, puzzles, read books etc with/to the kids. I fell in love with the amazing beautiful children there and I fully recommend this program and am happy to share my experience in more detail with anyone who is interested. I am missing the beautiful children and my experience very much and would definitely volunteer with and travel with RVO again.
I am very grateful for my time in Ghana and to the organization. I am proud to tell people that I am with Africa at Heart, as I know that the organization contributes part of the program costs to the project itself. I have recommended RVO to a number of friends and hope if they do decide to do volunteer work in Ghana, then they will go through RVO.
