Health Care Elective Volunteer Program

  • Qualifications required:Students who are at the medical/nursing school, qualified doctors, nurses, pre-healthcare students, CNAs, paramedics and public health workers
  • Placement settings:Rural and Urban hospitals/Clinics
  • Locations :Accra, Kumasi , Ho, Tamale, Cape Coast, Sunyani, Nkwakwa, Koforidua, Winneba
  • Program duration:Starting from 1 week to 50 weeks, programs start on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month
  • Language required: English :level ,basic ,intermediary and fluency
  • Age: 15yrs to 50yrs    Nationalities: Open to all nationalities
  • Accommodation:Volunteers live in a separate room with any of our well trained host families near the Project.
  • Program fees:Starting $275 USD First Week and $100 USD other weeks. This includes airport pick-up, Program orientation and supervision, accommodation, utility bills, Local SIM card, Official RVO T-Shirt ,Transportation to Kumasi or to project and host family first day ,Last day airport drop off, breakfast and dinner daily (Lunch out because volunteers are mostly at work during lunch hours) and 24/7 in-country support . Please note: Interns are charged a fee by the bigger hospitals where you can have enough hands on.
  • What Fees doesn’t include:Airfare from your home to Ghana, Entrance fee to tourist centers, Travelling Insurance, daily transportation to project site.

 

DESCRIPTION:

Our  healthcare elective program offers immense level of hands-on experience & knowledge in various,clinical specialties. The program encompasses anything from the clinical fields of Obstetrics and Gynecology,Pediatrics, Clinical Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Critical care, General and Orthopedics Surgery to the specialties of E.N.T, Ophthalmology and Radiology.
The program is open to all pre-med students, nursing students, physician assistants and students already in the medical school. Much on the program the students will also be able to do the following:

Attending ward rounds. Getting involved in bedside procedures under supervision i.e. phlebotomy, insertion of Intravenous cannullae, dressing and stitching of laceration, clerkship at casualty etc.

Assisting in theatre procedures like; Abscess drainage, Caesarian section, Appendectomy, Ganglion excision,

Amputations, Laparatomies, Palmer abscess drainage, Manual Vacuum aspirations, Bilateral tubal ligation.

The student rotations and ward work are organized in a manner that most benefits the student in attaining practical experience and integrating knowledge and also in an approach that serves to benefit patient care.Students are directed by the supervising doctors and consultants to enable them to draw an understanding of diverse aspects relating to the care of the patient e.g. relevant history taking in various body systems,physical examination, relevant laboratory investigations and their interpretation arriving at pertinent diagnoses and appropriate treatment measures.
Various procedures in the clinical medicine and pediatric rotations are viewed & carried out under supervision.

The Premedical Study Program will prepare students for entry into medical, dental or any other health-related graduate programs.
The program provides guidance and much support for students wishing to pursue these professional programs in their future career.

How long can I go on a HealthCare Elective Program for ?

RVO runs volunteer programs year-round but Teaching Volunteer program starts from 1 week to 24 weeks so volunteers are to choose their own total duration of stay in the program. Programs start on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month

How do I apply for a Healthcare Elective program in Ghana ?

  • Complete the free online application form with the details of your chosen program and dates, as well as details of your qualifications, skills and experience. You will then receive an email from RVO that we have received your application. Within 24 hours (1 working day), you will receive an email from our Programs Manager acknowledging your application and confirming, project and dates of your volunteer program. In this email, you will receive instructions on how to pay the deposit payment of the registration/program Fee in order to confirm your booking with the RVO
  • As soon as your deposit payment of registration/program Fee has been received by RVO, you will be provided with all the information and support you need to prepare for your upcoming volunteer program. Your Africa at Heart Program Manager will be your point of contact throughout your preparations up until you finish your volunteer program.

Please Note: Major hospitals like KATH in the cities where you can enjoy most healthcare facilities can be found, charges a fee before interns can enroll there. But there are no charges at the minor/small hospitals and clinics.

  

SUGGESTED ITINERARY: 

Day 1: Travel to Ghana Kotoka International Airport in Accra, transfer to hotel and meeting to coordinate the day-to-day scheduling for the week.

A typical day of a volunteer in the Project

You will be expected to work alongside   the nurses and the medical officers to attend to patients, give medicines and also help them relax.
The work is mostly depending on Interns level of knowledge, experience and skill. Interns would be mainly involved in care of patients, replacing bandages, checking blood pressure, first aid treatment, assisting in the delivery of babies, weighing of babies, Assist doctors and nurses in local hospitals to Educate people on basic prevention and first aid / healthcare education
